What is solution focused hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy – An Overview


Put simply, hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that relies on hypnosis. The hypnotherapist uses the subconscious mind to attempt to help with a variety of problems, most notably related to stress, anxiety and the breaking of bad habits.


Within science there is much debate about the effectiveness of hypnotherapy and we will explore this on the blog at a later date. But suffice to say it has long been used as a form of complimentary therapy and often with astounding results.


Solution focused hypnotherapy is a modern version of this technique. It focuses less on the problem you have and more on what it is you want to achieve, or the future you would like to see.


The history of solution focused hypnotherapy


The idea that the subconscious mind is always listening was one that was made popular by American psychiatrist and hypnotherapist Milton H. Erickson during the early – mid 1900s. Through his own life he found ways to use his mind to focus and achieve great things. Overcoming the effects of polio not once, but twice, he took his findings and used them on his patients, with incredible results. Erickson described it as allowing the subconscious mind to participate actively in the therapeutic process, using a conversation to induce a change.


Erickson’s work was taken further by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg during their work to develop Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). De Shazer and Berg’s theories were based on the idea that ‘there’s no connection between a problem and its solution. When you ask a client about their problem, they will tell you a certain kind of description; but when you ask them about their solutions, they give you entirely different descriptions of what the solution would look like for them.’ This is the foundation of the solution-based approach that focuses not on the problem, but on the desired outcome.


Modern solution focused hypnotherapy comes from tried and tested techniques based on the latest scientific understanding of how the brain works.

So, how does solution focused hypnotherapy work?


Solution focused hypnotherapy sessions are guided by a therapist. The therapist will work to understand what you, the client, wants to achieve rather than the problems that brought you to seek help in the first place.


With your permission your hypnotherapist will guide you into a state where you are able to hypnotise yourself, using relaxation and visualisation techniques to encourage positivity. This will enable your Subconscious brain to take an optimistic view of your strengths and your situation. Together you will focus on improving your present and future, discounting what has gone before.


But a solution focused hypnotherapy session is about more than just hypnosis. Your hypnotherapist will use the sessions to check in with you, to assess how you are feeling, to talk about the progress you’ve made and begin the process of learning to focus on the positives rather than dwelling on problems.


You will be able to re-learn how you think, get rid of stress and create the right chemicals in the brain to feel good and relaxed. And the best bit? Once you’ve been taught these methods you should be able to continue to practice them long after therapy has finished. The learnings from a course of hypnotherapy can stay with you for the rest of your life. You will begin to understand why you think, behave and suffer in the way you do and more importantly what you can do to help yourself. And all this in a relatively short period of time.
